Scheduled Maintenance in Berkeley, CA

One of the most important things to do with your BMW, Mini, Audi, VW or Porsche is to follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. This will ensure your vehicle is in top condition and ultimately increase its longevity. Be advised that a major service is a service of the whole car, not just a glorified oil change. Some major services are more expensive because more parts are replaced and more work is done, like spark plugs, or transmission fluid changes on certain models.

Recommended service schedule intervals can vary depending on the year, make and model of your vehicle. Most vehicles receive major services in 20,000 mile intervals (i.e., 20K, 40K, 60K, etc), then receive minor services in between at 10,000, and 5,000 mile intervals. The most expensive major services are usually scheduled at 40K or 55K intervals. Note that most major services take around a half day to perform. We prefer to start on services early in the day in case other issues like brakes or fluid changes arise. Please make an appointment to prioritize a time slot for your car.

What Is Missing From Factory Scheduled Maintenance

Many necessary maintenance items have been eliminated from the manufacturer’s required scheduled maintenance. In 1993, oxygen sensors and fuel filters were deleted from major services. In 1996, transmission services and coolant changes were eliminated for scheduled maintenance under the guise that the better fluids never needed changing, and were relabeled “Lifetime Fluids”. Then in 1999, most manufacturers went from 30K to 40K intervals for major services, lately some are up to 55K. Brake fluid changes were removed from major services under the pretext that they should be related to time, not mileage. Oil change intervals went from 5000 miles to 7500 miles, and since 2005 most models are now at 10,000 miles. Many timing belts are recommended at 105K, even though one motor, the 1.8 T, commonly breaks the timing belt long before the factory recommended interval. Do the math and one sees a trend. To sell more cars, manufacturers kept lowering the total cost of required maintenance from 0 to 100,000 miles and thus improving their JD Powers rating, which allows them to sell more cars. The result is a plethora of failing transmissions, clogged heater cores and radiators, and early engine failures.

We take transmission fluid samples during our major services. Each technician has an electronic pen to check brake fluid water content, an exact measure of condition and age. Coolant gets monitored for age and dilution. All 1996 and later cars get all the computers scanned for codes, then we print and discuss the results. We also acknowledge that many older cars have long since fallen off the service interval schedules and are at risk of expensive repairs or breakdowns due to failure of inexpensive parts. A major service includes a full mechanical inspection of your vehicle. Our technicians will check over the full gamete including the timing belt, cooling system, charging system, brakes, power steering fluid, etc. This inspection identifies potential problems before they have a chance of causing a break down.
